Graco responds to Friends of the Earth report – May 20, 2008

While we always strive to have a personal voice here on the blog, there will be certain situations where we will need to share the official company position regarding certain issues. As such, I am presenting you with Graco’s official response to a recent report released by FOE:

Today a report was released by the Friends of the Earth organization that there is a concern about possible health effects of halogenated fire retardants found in juvenile products. Although FOE has not yet supplied us with their specific findings about our products, we take reports such as this very seriously.

All products manufactured by Graco Children’s Products meet or exceed all relevant regulations and standards including those put forth by the Consumer Products Safety Commission and the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.

Even though industry experts deem these materials to be safe for continued use, Graco will be reviewing the report closely and is committed to evaluating alternative materials to use in our products.

At Graco, safety is always a top priority and nothing is more important than the well-being of the children who use our products. This is our commitment – not only as manufacturers but as parents as well.

If you have any questions about this, feel free to reach out to Consumer Services at 1-800-345-4109.

“Nothing is more important than the well-being of children…” I couldn’t agree more! Good for you, Graco!

As this report came out in May of 2008 and I am currently researching baby products for my baby to be in August of 2008 there are no updates to this subject. Graco’s consumer service center has no clue to the report and what Graco inc. has concluded about the FOE report. I have tried to reach the company in Exton with no avail. Even if Graco is as they state in their official position complying to gov’t rules and regs. They should still consider taking the fire retardant out of their products or at least have a few that are all natural to meet the needs of parents in other states than ones with the TB117 law as California.

I will not be buying any products of Graco until this issue is resolved and they take a proactive stance with fire retardants and not wait for the long bureaucratic process for them to be taken out of children’s products.
I hope they take that position soon.
