I’ve taken a long time to write this post, not just to capture the long list of incredible women (and man) I met 2 weeks ago at the BlogHer conference in San Francisco, but because I couldn’t quite figure out how to put into words what the experience meant to me. Well in the 2 weeks it’s taken me to write this wrap up, I didn’t really find the words, but here is what I can tell you – I had an AMAZING time. I think part of it was because I had zero expectations – not low expectations, just wasn’t sure quite what to expect, really. I knew I would get to see some of the bloggy friends I had made over the last 6 months, so for that I was excited, but I didn’t expect BlogHer to have quite the emotional impact it had. I haven’t read a ton of recaps from others about BlogHer because nobody quite has the same experience and I didn’t want their take, either positive or negative, to impact what I got out of the weekend. But I’ll still go ahead and write my take on it…
So – my biggest takeaway (I advise any man reading this to stop now) – I am proud to be a woman. Maybe a bit much for some but I can tell you when that thought crossed my mind. I was sitting in the Community Keynote, listening to story after story about what life is like for women. These incredible women, turned bloggers/writers, had captured, in their own voice, so many different aspects of life as a woman. And as I listened through laughter and tears, (I cry during Hallmark commercials!) I turned around to see my good “mate” Paull sitting there taking it all in. I thought to myself (and then later to him), “what was that experience like for a man?” I told him he would have had to read 5 years worth of Cosmo magazine to get what he got out of 1 hour at BlogHer! These women, their stories, and the organization of BlogHer, had brought them all together – and let the rest of us connect with them and with each other.
Whew – I guess those were some of the words I wanted to voice about my experience. Again, maybe a little dramatic for some, but you weren’t there, in my seat, in my mind, 2 weeks ago in San Fancisco – I was and this is just how I felt about it. On to my shout-outs…
