How About a New Month’s Resolution? Please?

Posted by Amy Sleep in January 22nd 2009

resolution How About a New Months Resolution? Please?I know many people make and then quickly break their New Years resolutions but I wanted to be REALLY serious about mine this year. Really. I swear. I took my time in thinking about it and mine seemed simple. It seemed doable. And it was important. . . .get more sleep.

The month of December was a wee bit more insane than usual since my hubby was out of town for the first two weeks of the month. Heck, I didn’t start Christmas shopping until the 23rd! I got everything done that needed to get done, but my sleep definitely suffered. Suffered? If I got 5 hours uninterrupted, (the keyword with two little ones around) I was psyched!

Then it happened. My hubby and I went away for two nights without the kids (yay! Grandparents!). Not only was it great to spend time together, but we got to SLEEP! Seriously, we slept until 10:30am both days (you’ve got to LOVE the hotel light blocking shades!) And then something even more amazing happened- I was more awake (in retrospect this really shouldn’t have been shocking), but I was also happier, felt better, and was much more relaxed (OK. Not having the kids around helped with the relaxation part a bit)

I know this doesn’t sound earth shattering but it made me (a notorious “little sleeper”) realize that I could get better quality time in each day (vs. trying to get more time into each day). So it became my resolution. Get more sleep. I didn’t even define how much since I thought I might not keep to it.  I came into the new year all excited about being a more alert and well rested.

And then reality hit.

My problem was getting home and back to The Routine. Uh oh. The dreaded Routine. I think I made it at home for about 12 hours before I broke my resolution (yes. I went to bed around 1am my first night back home). And now, here I am 2 weeks and one case of strep throat later realizing that, hey, maybe I should get back to that commitment to myself.

So I’m thinking I’ll make it a New Month’s Resolution (or even a New Week’s Resolution if I can’t wait that long). That’s Ok, right? Now I just need to overcome The Routine and convince my teething 9 month old and stuffy-nosed almost-three year old that they should adhere to the resolution too.  Yes.  Please wish me some luck!

Let me know how is turns out. There are never enough hours in the day and sleep is the first to go for me. I wanted to exercise more, but that involved getting up earlier which means less sleep. Right now sleep is winning.

I have also tried to commit to getting more sleep, but only succeed about 50% of the time:) I don’t think moms (especially working moms) get to sleep in until the kids are like 25. Then, of course there is a chance of becoming a grandparent which means you will be watching the grandkids while your kid sleeps!

At least I’m not alone in the sleepless/sleep deprived category! I agree. I think the solution is to have more hours in the day. I think we got an extra minute this year — it’s a start ! :-)

I hope you get the sleep you need. I’m deficient in sleep as I have a three week old but I know I’ll get it back again one day…right? ;)

Sleep deprivation will probably be the norm for a while. How long? When they are teen-agers you will be trying to wake them up.:-) Love, Mom
