Taking the Day “On” to celebrate MLK Jr. Day

mlkshirtMonday was the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Graco provided its employees with the day off and while many people enjoyed kicking back and relaxing, my household used the day to participate in some community service. It is a day that is especially meaningful for my husband. His mother’s family grew up in the South and participated in civil rights activities. Honoring Dr. King’s legacy by reaching out and volunteering is a family tradition so instead of taking the day off, we take the day on.

Our volunteer activity took us to a great organization that is only a few blocks from where my husband grew up. My husband’s company was providing computer skills training and mural painting. It was really great to see people sharing their computer expertise with children and adults who aren’t as tech savvy as my computer geek savvy husband. Slick isn’t so fluent with Microsoft Office, but he was there and he will be there next year and the year after that and so on.

We are looking forward to sharing Day of Service experiences with Slick in the years to come. With each passing year, he’ll understand the holiday a little more and play a bigger part in volunteer process. For now, being around volunteerism and coloring in his Little Bill “Thank You Dr. King” coloring book seems appropriate.

Does your family volunteer in your community? Did you take the day on? I’d love to hear about it.

We didn’t do anything this year but plan on doing a lot of charity throughout the rest of the year. I would like to get into at least four different walks for charities and then do some personal volunteer work.

I have a huge heart for it but the time factor raising three little kids (one is 3 weeks old) is my biggest issue right now. I will find a way to overcome that though.
