It’s a… It’s a…

Like a lot of people “our age,” Hubby says he doesn’t like the idea of “ruining” the surprise by finding out the gender of the child before birth. Hearing those words “It’s a….. It’s a…..” he says, is the fun part of waiting to find out. With our girls, we always wanted to be surprised and we were rewarded after all of that mystery and anticipation with a “hat trick” of 3 precious daughters.

Now we are going to be grandparents. As soon as we got this news, hubby “instructed” the parents-to-be to wait – “You’re not going to try to find out the sex, I hope,” he says. I can understand his point of view about waiting for the mother-to-be because it provides that extra boost of encouragement that sometimes helps us tough it out to the end of the pregnancy and through labor day… but for grandparents, I think the “It’s a……It’s a…….” is just as exciting any time it happens.

This is the information age…..we want information and we want it now. In fact, I’ve been jumping out of my skin wondering. It is such a struggle not to admire all of the cute little girl things or cute little boys things out there! Working for a baby gear company makes it even tougher for me because I am surrounded by all of the fabulous fashions and innovative product development going on. There are so many more gender specific choices now for both boys and girls than when my girls were little.
So, of course, I am chomping at the bit to find out what gender he/she is. He/she is 20 weeks now. He/she can hear. It’s so awkward to keep saying “him/her”, “he/she”. But I am so excited (read – obnoxious). I bought the parents-to-be the Graco Prenatal Heart Listener. It comes with a CD of classical music and these cute little prenatal headphones for the baby! The other day, I read my first prenatal story to him/her (see what I mean about awkward?)

Today’s the day I find out if I’m going to be a grandmother or a grandfather – he he. I’m nervous because I already know that once I know, I will then “know” and I will be thrilled….. yet…..possibly disappointed, because as I sit here right now, I could be having either a granddaughter(!) or a grandson(!), so one of those possibilities will go away… at least for now…..

So my daughter is coming by on her way home from the ultrasound appointment. We are waiting in our driveway! She bounds out of the car wearing blue, and so is the dad-to be…..out comes a blue folder filled with ultrasound pictures and she asks us if we can tell by looking.

Picture after picture of this beautiful child that is now 10 inches long is passed around the group. We see feet, ears and noses and yawns and fingers and.. what’s that? That’s the umbilical cord! So after we sift through the pile of pictures we are told that they did not snap one of the genitals. So she finally announces those wonderful words we’ve been waiting for….. “It’s a…… It’s a…….GIRL! So my daughter is going to have a daughter. And isn’t she lovely?!

There is no way I could have waited…I open my Christmas presents early if I find them. Finding out the sex of a baby is even more exciting that Christmas, so OF COURSE I had to find out. And the element of surprise was still there. Just 20 or so weeks earlier. :)

Congratulations on your grand daughter! How exciting it must be to see your daughter becoming a mother.

Congratulations! I love the element of surprise, and having everyone guess right up until the end. I can say that my mom is itching to know what we are having…
