What I miss while I’m at work

overheardMy poor husband. Every evening when we sit down for dinner, I grill him on the happenings of the day. What did you guys do all day? Were the kids good? Did you go anywhere? Did they take naps? Did you lose your mind? You know- the typical questions. I often get bummed that I missed a cool trip or a funny moment but there are also a lot of times that, quite frankly, I’m happy to have been at work.

One way that I stay in touch with what’s going on at home while I’m at work is by calling and checking in during the day.  I enjoy these quick calls because it gives me a glimpse at what’s going on at any given time.  Most of the time the calls are funny and often perplexing. The things I hear on my side of the phone are entertaining enough that I started jotting down what I heard with the thought of sharing these, probably typical, one-sided conversations. Here are some of the things I’ve heard over the last few months:

From kids in the background:
- “I don’t like you anymore”
- “See? When you do this it sticks your butt out”
- “Daddy? Daddy? Daddy! Da-deeeee!  Daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy. DAD!” (12 times. DH has an amazing ability for blocking that out)
- “Oh- that’s a good idea!
- “OUCH! Stop it!” (crying ensues- that’s overheard daily)
- “MINE!” “No mine!” (usually followed by the muffled sound of toddler wrestling)

From Dad to kids:
- “Please stop”
- “Don’t put that in your mouth!”
- “B. Stay inside. You don’t have any clothes on!”
- “Don’t jump off of that.”
- “B. B. B! B! Beeeeeeeeee” (trails off, hangs up) That one required a call back.
- “Hold on. Hold on. Please wait. Stop. Stop!!”
- “B. Don’t pull- that will hurt him!” (first in reference to the dog, then later on another call, in reference to Jagger’s ear)
- “Are you kidding me?” (followed by me saying “What? What? What just happened?”)

Most of these phone calls are quickly ended by one of us. DH usually ends the conversation when he’s being pulled in another direction or because the thought of having an uninterrupted 5 minute phone call with his wife will cost him by way of clean up somewhere else. And sometimes they’re ended by me saying “Gotta Go! I have a conference call now” which is almost always true ;)

Ah, Lindz…I laughed out loud on that one. Mike will say, “How’s your…” (interrupt here by screaming 4 yo being bitten by 2yo b/c 4 yo tackled him) Mike continues “…nevermind, sounds awesome. I guess I’ll let you go.”

Funny, funny stuff. The whole “Mommy, mommy, mommy (louder now) mommy, mommm-my, (now screaming at the top of his lungs) moommmmmeeee” happend every time I move the phone toward my ear:) I feel your hubby’s pain!

The best part, which I’m SURE you NEVER do is…”why are there still dished in the sink” when Mike gets home. Really?? Love ya!
