Tantrums at One Year Old?
Posted by Kim Lefko in September 10th 2009
Seriously, how is this possible? Our little Love Bug who appears to be quite innocent is throwing all-out temper tantrums at one year old! At times we find it to be quite hilarious, at other times my husband and I are completely baffled by it.

Well here is just a small sampling of what sets off the adorable Love Bug:
Looking at a plate of chicken and vegetables for dinner. This results in a very obvious “no, no” shake of the head. If we continue to force it…the arms start swinging. Not good!
Lying still for 60 seconds to have her diaper changed. This results in two little legs moving faster than I ever imagined possible. Sure, a little screaming to go along with it.
Having her toothbrush taken away from her (this might be the most volatile) I will have to capture this on video and post it.
And of course…when her sister takes any baby doll away from her
Our response varies, but most of the time:
I laugh inside, and just give her a moment to cool off.
My husband loves when I say - Love Bug has the patience of her daddy.
My favorite response was when Love Bug’s big sister (Bear) said, “Like Aunt Kris says, little people - little problems!”
Yes, I will admit on several occasions I find myself reading frantically in my Parenting Handbooks - how to deal with tantrums in toddlers. I’m just shocked this is an issue so early. Is it bad to begin bribery & deception at 12 months? I was reading how other moms are dealing with it, and I stumbled across a fun and valued POV from Mom101, hey if she is doing it…I say I’m good to go. Sure Love Bug won’t comprehend; “Sweetie it’s not chicken its applesauce” - but if hiding the chicken in the apple sauce works…victory!

I remember thinking the same thing with B - she had tantrums starting at about 18 months and I thought- Oh boy, we’re in for the long haul but they stopped after a couple of months and I think it was totally related to communication. She was a later talker then Jagger was and he never really had those issues and wasn’t a tantrum thrower. B had trouble communicated what she wanted so she resorted to tantrums - at least that was my theory. So now at 3, we moved from tantrums to ‘tude!!
Good luck- I’m sure it won’t last.
