It is certainly awesome to have the ability to have any moment to oneself if you have your baby inside a bouncy chair. You understand they won't get hurt or stroll off.

Stephanie, thanks so much for the advice...it is much appreciated to have this insight as I prepare for baby! As for your additional "must-haves", just purchased a Bebe Au Lait nursing cover and the new camera is on the list too!

Other "must-haves" I would add to the list:
* a nursing cover
* nursing pajamas
* a nice digital camera
* a mattress protector for your bed

Okay, I'm done. :)

Hi Heidi!

I'm going to play "devil's advocate" here and share my thoughts on each of your ten items. :)

For your reference, I have two girls: a 3-year-old and a 6-month-old.

1. Pack 'n Play: We never owned one and never missed having one. When our babies were sleeping, they were in our bed or on a mattress on the floor. And when they were awake? We much preferred to have them in our arms (and they preferred that too, I think).

2. Infant Car Seat: I definitely recommend you get a convertible car seat instead. That way, your baby can stay in it from birth to booster. It's much more cost-effective. On top of that, studies have shown that extended time in car seats is bad for infants so you'll probably just be using the car seat in the car anyway.

3. Swing or Bouncer: Neither of my girls liked "swinging" (not all babies do) so I usually recommend that moms borrow before buying. A bouncer, however, is super nice to have around - especially the super lightweight kind that you can carry from room to room.

4. Sling or Baby Carrier: I agree 100%. My top 3 carriers (in order of preference) are: (1) ERGO, (2) kokopax, and (3) BabyHawk Mei Tai.

5. Swaddle Blankets: Yes, swaddle blankets are a "must-have," for sure. I especially like the aden + anais brand.

6. Nursing Pillow: Yep. Great advice. I actually preferred the My Brest Friend pillow to the Boppy, but both have their advantages and disadvantages...

7. Highchair or booster: New moms will want one.

8. Diaper Bag: I never used one, to be honest. I much prefer carrying a super stylish purse or laptop tote.

9. Diapers: Yes. Pampers Swaddlers are fantastic, but I'm thinking of trying cloth...

10. Stroller: My advice? Skip the bulky travel systems. Instead, buy a jogging stroller (if you like running) and an umbrella stroller.

Thanks for the article and...CONGRATS on your pregnancy!
