A little over a month ago when a friend on Twitter asked me if I was going to Blogalicious09, I wasn’t even sure what it was. Now I know what it is, but I had no idea the effect attending it would have on me. Being my first blog conference I was very nervous. I mean, who doesn’t get nervous going into a crowd of strangers and saying “Hi, my name is…”.
Gathered around tables we readied our blackberries and laptops for the first speakers. Stefania Pomponi Butler, aka City Mama presented opening remarks describing a post she wrote in 2007 and a conversation from Blogher ’07 that sparked further discussion on the need for marketers to reach out to women of color. She then introduced the founders of Blogalicious09 – Mamalaw. What an amazing trio. These three intelligent, beautiful women rose to the challenge of creating an event in hopes to start filling the void that had become so obvious to many. There were plenary sessions, choices of breakout sessions, and many attendees wishing they had a twin so they could attend two sessions at once.
The Saturday afternoon keynote speaker was phenomenal. Karen Walrond celebrates the Beauty of Different, and I was truly inspired by her great advice for writing. Strong points like “finding your own voice” and “write your passion” really hit home. None of us should try to be someone we’re not. Enjoy what you do and that will come across in your writing. You are, in fact, reflecting who you are directly through your words. Make them count.
If you’re on Twitter, like so many of my new friends (I could never list them all), you can search #blogalicious09 for more information from the sessions, including some great links for including other media forms to your blog to add variety. Also, check out our Flickr page for more pics from the weekend coming soon!
I want to thank all of the wonderful women of Blogalicious09 for making my first conference truly spectacular. If you would like to read any of their recaps you can find them listed centrally here. I hope to be so lucky to see them all again in Miami, FL for Blogalicious10. Will you be there too?
