Girls Weekend – BYOK (Bring your own kid)

It is unbelievable that I have been living in Georgia for almost a year. It seems like yesterday I was panicking over leaving the state where I lived most of my life, and moving my family south. The past year has been the amazing adventure we thought it would be, but it also has had its challenges.

When we moved, I knew I would miss my friends. Friends, along with my family, have been a great support while raising my children. Play dates with my closest friends and their children were highlights of our weekends.

When friends move away, everyone always says, “We’ll come visit you when you get settled.” But does anyone ever really go to visit? I know I am guilty of this exact statement (and I still have yet to visit friends that moved to two different cities in NY). It’s hard enough managing vacation and/or sick time when you have small children and work full time, let alone to splurge using the time to visit friends over family.

I was overjoyed to find out two of my closest girlfriends were actually holding themselves true to their statement and coming to visit me in Atlanta! WOW! And they were leaving husbands at home and bringing their children! Double WOW! Girls weekend ahead! I say this with excitement because both friends have daughters, one is 3 ½ years old and the other is 7 months old.

Traveling with children can sometimes be a challenge in itself, but throw in all the gear you need and it gets a little crazy! Here is where working for Graco pays off. I happen to be lucky (DH would beg to use a different word here) to have an assorted range of car seats, strollers, pack n plays and of course Jed’s favorite, the sweetpeace™ to share. All my friends had to do was pack some clothes and get on a plane! I loved being able to make the trip easier for them.

My friends flew in on Thursday and out on Sunday. Our children played together while we caught up on each other’s lives and shared stories on teething, potty training, and parenting challenges. It was a whirlwind weekend, but so much fun. The visit reaffirmed my belief that the number of miles between friends never matters. They will always be there for me. :-)

Now it’s time for me to live up to my own statement and head back north for a visit…maybe even a little more north than PA. Time is too short to not enjoy the things in life that are important.

Is there a close friend you haven’t seen in a long time? Are you planning a visit to reconnect in person with friends this summer?

One of my college friends and I have stayed close over the years and even though we live about 2 hours apart now, we still get together several times a year. Sometimes I pack up my kids and go there and sometimes she packs up hers and comes here, but we always make sure to have brownies on hand for some after-the-kids-are-in-bed snacking. :)
