Guest Post: Melissa from Full Circle

Back in 2009, I was a relative newbie to the world of blogging. While surfing around one evening I stumbled on a truly inspirational blog. I was so moved by the Melissa’s writing that I nominated a post of hers for our celebratory 100th Monthly Nod.

Melissa was, in fact, awarded our 100th Monthly Nod for this amazing post.

Go read it. I’ll wait here.

I can honestly tell you that I am still keeping up with Melissa to this day via her blog Full Circle and on twitter @fullcircle_mel. Then it hit me. How wonderful would it be to share not only her start, but her journey towards motherhood with all of you as well.

My Darling Husband and I met in 2001 and were wed in ‘06. We wanted to start a family and got busy right-quick because, quite honestly, time wasn’t on our side. By then, I was already in my late thirties and he in his early forties. I gave us a year trying the old fashioned way and, if in that time we did not conceive, we were on to Plan B..

Adoption.

During the year we were trying to get pregnant my gut feeling was it wasn’t going to happen. I was busy doing my homework. Time was of the essence and I wasn’t going to allow any gaps. It’s a girl thing. I researched International, Domestic and Foster to Adopt and considered each very carefully. I weighed the pros and cons, contacted people that had been through each process, listened and prayed. One spoke to my heart over and over…

Foster to Adopt.

To me the calling was clear. These kids were in our backyard and very much in need. I presented the information gathered to Hubs, we attended informational meetings and he was on board. We chose an excellent county (not the one we live in, by the way) and our training and home study began. They were very up front that they are NOT an adoption agency (their #1 priority is to reunify families), we totally agreed and were not discouraged. Truth be told, our family was a little leery of the whole idea (that’s common, I might add) but we plodded forward just the same.

By July of 2008 we were certified. I was just sure we would get “the call” likity split but it took a month before the phone rang for our first (possible) placement. It was for a sibling set (sisters, ages 3 and 5). After our conversation, we met with social workers to hear all the information they had to decide if it was a good placement for us or not. We had 24 hours to make our decision.

And we deliberated.

Unfortunately, there was an aspect of the case that would’ve been way too much for us to handle. I was gung-ho, ready to jump in with both feet (read: Wonder Woman), but Darling Husband was our voice of reason and talked me down from the edge. Two very important things to remember are to: 1) Be on the same page as your mate 2) Go with your gut. He was right and I relented.

Devastated, I packed my super hero cape and we waited… again.

At the end of January, 2009 we finally got another call. This time it was for 4 ½ year old twins (brother/sister) and they were a good match for our family. It was then that our fostering to adopt journey truly began.

What would transpire over the next 8 months was a combination of sheer joy and complete heartbreak. That being said, if we knew then what we know now, we still wouldn’t change a single moment.

And our lives would never been the same…
