Books for Back-to-School

Here in Georgia, many kiddos have already headed back to the classroom so I’ve got a wonderful book to share with you that I think would make a perfect “back to school” gift for your favorite little one.

BeautifulOops! by Barney SaltzbergGracie’s Nannie, a former preschool teacher, and I, her very clumsy Mama, came across this book and were enchanted: Beautiful Oops! is a very special book.  The lesson that the author, Barney Saltzberg, is teaching?  It’s OK to a make a mistake and, in fact, mistakes can be wonderful!!

Beautiful Oops! isn’t meant to be passively read; there are flaps to lift, holes to investigate, smudges to interpret.  What starts as an “Oops” turns into a “Wow.”

I’ve already shared this beautiful book with Gracie – I don’t think it’s ever too early to teach a child that there’s no such thing as perfection.  In fact, imperfection is just fine – even beautiful.  Being able to see wonderful possibility in things that don’t go as planned?  Priceless.

I couldn’t resist sharing this with you because it’s an awesome book – beautifully illustrated, beautifully crafted, beautiful message.   For another fun book idea, visit Silly Eagle Books – I loved Vanessa’s discovery this week of another book celebrating the unusual: The Beastly Book of Twisted Tales.

I could go on and on (so I will – for a moment):  The Pencil opens a child’s imagination and makes them think about “what next,” A Day with No Crayons helps kids discover color in the world and The Dot teaches young minds the important lesson of being proud of themselves.

What books have you shared with your children lately as they prepare for a return to the classroom?  Happy Reading!
